WhatsApp automation for Nigerian businesses: a plain-English guide

Samuel Sholarin/6 min read

If your customers reach you on WhatsApp, you already know the pattern. The same questions arrive all day: how much is this, is it available, where are you, do you deliver. Each one takes a minute to answer, and the ones you miss at night are often sales you lose. Automation does not replace you on WhatsApp. It handles the repetitive part so you can focus on the conversations that need a person.

The two ways to run WhatsApp for business

The free WhatsApp Business app gives you quick replies, greeting and away messages, labels and a simple catalogue. It is a good start for a single phone and a small team, but it cannot run real automation or connect to your other systems.

The WhatsApp Business Platform (often called the API) is what businesses use for proper automation. It lets several staff work from one number, connects WhatsApp to your CRM or order system, and lets an automated assistant reply, take details and hand over to a person. You use it through a provider or directly through Meta, and it needs a verified business setup.

What it costs to run

There are usually three costs. The build, which is a one-time cost for setting up the flows and connecting your tools. A provider or hosting fee, if you use one. And Meta's own charges for certain messages, such as template messages that you send to start a conversation. Meta's pricing depends on the type of message and the country, and it has changed more than once, so always check the current rate card before you plan a broadcast. We bill these platform costs at cost and list them separately, so you can see exactly what you pay Meta.

What to automate first

  • Common questions: prices, availability, opening hours, location and delivery areas.
  • Catalogue and price list requests, sent instantly with images.
  • Order and booking capture: name, item, address, preferred time, logged straight into your system.
  • Reminders for appointments, payments and deliveries.
  • Follow-ups for enquiries that went quiet, sent on a schedule instead of from memory.

What to keep human

Complaints, negotiations, refunds and anything sensitive should go to a person, quickly. Good automation recognises these and hands over with the full conversation attached, so the customer never has to repeat themselves. Be open that customers are talking to an assistant at first. People mind slow answers far more than they mind automation.

Stay on the right side of the rules

  • Only send marketing messages to people who opted in, and honour opt-outs immediately.
  • Follow WhatsApp's business and commerce policies, or your number can be restricted.
  • Treat chat data as personal data under the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023: collect only what you need and keep it secure.

A simple way to start this week

Write down the ten questions you answer most often, and the answers you give. Mark which ones always need a person. That list is the first version of your automation, and it is also the brief we would ask you for on a first call.
